New Table4 Website is Live

It’s had a few faces over the last year or so but this time I think we’ve cracked it. Normally satisfied with working on our clients websites instead of our own we decided to begin 2010 with a brand new look.

www.table4.com

The site is currently in a beta phase as there are some nice features still to appear on the home page and throughout the site, but hopefully you’ll all like the overall looks and design.

Cheers!

Not only will the new site look bang up to date with the trends-to-be of 2010, we’ve also come up with a new way of helping our clients understand everything needed to get them on the right road to success.

Below is a teaser image of what our new website will look like, we hope you’ll like it – not long now!

Cyber Monday Online Retailer Christmas Rush

According to popular belief online retailers across the world are preparing for what is known as ‘Cyber Monday’.

Every year the first Monday of December aka Cyber Monday is supposedly the busiest online shopping day. Online retailers will be ordering in as much stock as possible to cope with what is expected to be their peak sales point.

It has been predicted that 85% of people will be shopping online this Christmas and according to online statistics many people do their browsing whilst they’re still at work. Well let’s just hope the boss doesn’t find out…

Tips for Shopping Online:

  • Check for Validation - A good website should have validation from Verisign, McAfee, Internet Shopping Is Safe, SafeBuy or GeoTrust. This is confirmation that the site has been built properly and that it is safe to enter your card details.
  • Bad Reviews? – Try Googling the name of the online retailer to see if there are many people giving bad reviews about that website in particular. People who have had bad online experiences will tend to want to share it with the world.
  • Who and Where Are They? – Check for full company information i.e. Company Numbers, Addresses, Phone Numbers, etc.
  • Shipping – They should provide clear terms and conditions for delivery and a whole heap of other legal stuff.
  • Appearance - An online retailer with an expensive looking website normally indicates they mean business. A scruffy, 1999-looking website with page errors and broken links could possibly mean they set it up over-night and have no intension of honouring any agreements.
  • Testimonials - Not the most convincing feature on an ecommerce website but reviews and customer feedback can sometimes give insight to its popularity. However, there is always the possibility the owner has them written in-house…

We’ve been doing our very best to get everything in place for our customer’s ecommerce websites, to ensure the big day goes smoothly for them this Christmas. Whether Cyber Monday has a large impact or not, our specialists will be waiting on-hand to spring into action and save the day if need be. If you would like to discuss how to improve your current ecommerce website or to discuss having one built then please contact us for more details: info@table4.com

New Ecommerce Website

Our good friends at Plumbnation have once again given us the chance to show the world of ecommerce what we’re made of. This is the third major redesign the website has undergone and in our humble opinion it is easily the best one to date!

Our philosophy on bespoke ecommerce websites is that they should be (in a nutshell and in no particular order):

  1. simple to use with no learning curve involved
  2. easy to navigate with the means to help you find what you’re looking for quickly
  3. modern clean graphics that are relevant to what the site is selling
  4. safe and secure for online payments

Have a look at the home page and see how the site fits everything in nicely whilst allowing the content room to breathe:

Plumbnation Ecommerce Website - Home

Try shopping online there yourself and see if you can navigate the site successfully to the checkout page with a full basket (i.e. not like poorly built ecommerce websites where you have to go through 20 pages before it tells you how much the shipping costs – grrrrrr). Our goal design/functionality wise was to remove anything unnecessary between (a) finding the product and (b) checking out. We think we managed this in the fewest amount of clicks possible. After all, good design = efficient functionality.

Plumbnation Ecommerce Website - Product Page

This is all a pretty general description of how the website came to be but we won’t bore you with too many technical details. We will say however that the backend of the website has a bucket-load of applications working to aid the company’s work flow and reduce overall man-hours. There’s more to it than plush graphics and user experience but we’d have to babble on for hours to really give you the grand tour. So you’ll just have to take our word for it when we say it’s fantastic and our client is more than pleased with our hard work, or don’t take our word for it – you can read what our client said here: http://www.whichwebdesigncompany.com/uk/profile/table4 :)

If you would like to discuss having your own ecommerce website built by us then please send us an email and get the ball rolling – it won’t hurt to ask we promise :)

10k Run Sefton Park Liverpool

Chris, one of our very own directors completed a 10k run in Sefton Park in Liverpool last Sunday!

Setting an example for programmers everywhere, Chris managed to finish the race in just under an hour.
Some of us (including myself) said he couldn’t do it but by golly he sure showed us! :)

Even ex-Liverpool player Alan Kennedy was there to pat him on the back as he finished! He’s already planning his next run soon so the best of luck to him (the next one’s twice as long).

Well done Chris! Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to eat my hat…

Wordpress Blog Worm Attack

Wordpress had this to say about the potential vulnerability of using an older version of Wordpress (versions 2.8.3 and earlier):

“This particular worm, like many before it, is clever: it registers a user, uses a security bug (fixed earlier in the year) to allow evaluated code to be executed through the permalink structure, makes itself an admin, then uses JavaScript to hide itself when you look at the user’s page,”

“It then attempts to clean up after itself, then goes quiet so you never notice while it inserts hidden spam and malware into your old posts.”

We’ve updated all of our clients’ Wordpress blogs to the latest version 2.8.4, which is immune to the worm. This service was provided free of charge to all our clients who use Wordpress.

Wordpress Tip Disable Paged Comments

Don’t have your comments paginated, this is pretty bad for SEO. Luckily it’s easily fixed though!

Go to ‘Settings‘ > ‘Discussion‘ and untick the box that says ‘Break comments into pages

Sorted!

Twitter vs. Facebook Lite

We have to admit we’re much more likely to use Facebook rather than Twitter, but the simplicity of Twitter has always appealed to us. Lots of people love the millions of applications and games that you can get your hands on with Facebook, but they’re not always everyone’s cup of tea (nor ours for that matter). Writing messages and comments on our friends pages and laughing at the latest photos of them drunk in a garden seems to be what attracts us to it the most. So perhaps a simplified version of Facebook would be the ideal solution? It looks as though Facebook lite has been designed for users with poor internet connections and mobile devices, but if Facebook lite picks up perhaps it could destroy Twitter entirely? We reckon it won’t be that easy for Facebook, but only time will tell it seems…
